Drivers License

In order to legally operate a motor vehicle, you are required to have a drivers license. This card is issued by the state in which you live; however, you can use it to drive anywhere in the United States and Canada. It also serves as a major form of identification in the US. If you are visiting America for a short stay, then you can still drive using your country’s driving license. However, if you are planning to live in the country for more than six months, then you will be required to acquire a US driving license.

How to get a Drivers License

Obtaining an American driver’s license is one of the most important things that you should do once you have attained the driving age or moved into the country for a long stay. Apart from allowing you to drive legally, it will also serve as a major form of identification. Driving is a very essential part of American life. Even teenagers drive to school as they can get their driving permit as early as they turn 15.

The first step to getting your drivers license is to visit your state’s Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) office. Each state has specific guidelines that you must meet before getting this license. However, some of the basic requirements for all states include:

  • Proof of your identity: Every state requires you to provide some form of identification before you can become a licensed driver. This may include your passport, international driver’s license and I.D card. These forms of identification should contain your birth date.
  • Proof of your residency: Some states may not allow you to hold a driver’s license if you are on a visitor’s visa. Therefore, be ready to provide proof of legal residency.
  • Social security number: Some states can allow you to get your license at the DMV office while others will require you to visit the Social Security Office in your area to obtain one.
  • Visual exam: Always remember to carry your eye glasses if you wear any because you will be required to take a visual test.
  • Application fees: This will vary from state to state and can be anywhere from $10 to $45.

Before taking the driving exam, most states will require you to sit and pass a written test. This is usually a multi-choice computerized test. You can prepare for this test by reading the Driver’s Handbook, which you will get at the DMV office at no fee. Both the Driver’s Handbook and the test are available in different languages.

The outcome of your test will come out immediately. If you are successful, then you will be issued a permit, which allows you to drive in company of a licensed driver. You can then schedule an appointment for driving test. If you fail, then, in most cases, you will be allowed to retake it at no fee.

Before getting your license, you will be required to drive for a certain time period. Some states will require you to do this on the highway or freeway. If you have never driven in the United States, then you might want to take driving lessons in order to have confidence on the road. In addition, you will be required to have at least a minimum automobile insurance before you can be issued with the license. Once you have passed the test, you will be issued with a document that will allow you to drive legally. Your driver’s license will then be mailed to you within 90 days. This license has a validity period of five years; hence you will need to renew it upon expiry.

Renewing your drivers license

Proof of financial responsibility is required when you are seeking renewal for your drivers license. You can meet this requirement by purchasing an automobile insurance policy. A valid driver’s license is usually valid for five years, with its expiry coinciding with your date of birth. A renewed license, which you can apply for one year prior to the expiry of your license or two years afterwards, comes with a validity period of eight years. There are three options when renewing your license: online, in person or by mail. The same options apply when you are renewing an expired license.

However, when your license is suspended, then you will be required to pay a suspension fee online before you can receive a new driver’s license. You will receive the details of this step in the notice the DMV will send when you are eligible to receive a new license. Remember, the cost of your insurance premiums may increase after the suspension of your license. All states will require you to meet several requirements before renewing your license. Some of these requirements include passing a vision test, updating your current address if it does not match your records at the DMV and paying a license renewal fee.

Replacing your drivers license

Losing or having your driver’s license stolen can create a myriad of problems. However, the DMV can help you get a replacement for it. Most states will require you to file a police report as soon as you lose your license.

Replacing your lost license does not have to be a daunting task. All you have to do is apply to your state’s DMV for a duplicate license. You can do this online or via mail if you have not changed your address. The replacement fees vary from state to state. For instance, in New York, the replacement fee is $17.50. However, the DMV will replace your license at no cost if you lost it as a result of a crime (as long as you filed a police report). For this, you will need to obtain form MV-78B from the police and apply for the duplicate in person at the local DMV office.

Changing address on your drivers license

If you have just moved, then be sure to update your records with your state’s DMV office. The best way to do this in New York is by filling out form MV-232 (Change of Address). With this form, you can fill in your drivers license or learner’s permit, car registration records, and I.D cards either by mail, phone or in person. You can either let the DMV know your changed address without receiving new documents showing your new address or pay a fee to the office to issue you will a replacement of your license, permit or ID card. Changing your address via mail will cost you $17.50 while doing so via phone will cost you $22.50 in New York.

Changing your name on the drivers license

If you have recently gotten married, changed your name through courts or finalized a divorce, then you might want to change your name on your drivers license. In order to do this, you must notify your State’s DMV office. This is one of the DMV requirements that you cannot complete online or via mail. Instead, you have to visit the DMV office in person. During your visit, you will be required to provide the following:

  • The driver’s license that has your former name
  • Proof of name change. This can be a marriage certificate, divorce papers or court documents indicating change of name.
  • A completed application for another driver’s license
  • A name change fee. In New York, this is $12.50

Your new license will then be mailed to you within four weeks.

Getting a learner’s permit

This permit is issued to drivers of 14 years or older to assist in the learning or relearning process. Generally, it is issued for one year at a time, and it is subject to renewal. If you are issued with this permit, you must hold it for at least 10 days before you can apply for full driving privileges. These privileges are allowed when you turn 17, even if you have never held a learner’s permit.

In order to apply for your learner’s permit, you must appear in person at your area’s exam office in order to be photographed. If you are a minor under the age of 18, then your parent or guardian will be required to accompany you. However, if this is not possible, then you may download the application form and have your parent or guardian sign it in the presence of a notary. In addition, you should be ready to take a written and vision tests when applying for this permit. The cost is usually $20.

Driving is a privilege that you should never lose. With your drivers license, you can operate a motor vehicle legally. The rules and stipulations for obtaining this license vary from state to state. In addition, there are various classifications of drivers licenses with restrictions on how they can be used. Once you have obtained your license, you can use it to drive a vehicle in any state within the Union.
